50 Years Competing Athlete and 30 Years Athletics Coaching

    broken image

A competitor since age 8, as there was an under 12 age group that Athletics South Australia provided that the youngest was 9 years but due to my older brother and sister competing and the enthusiasm I showed, they allowed me to participate earlier.

During the 2023/24 season, my personal achievements included 9 Gold, 3 Silver and a Bronze from the 14 events entered in the Australian Masters Games. I live and breathe the competitive spirit and posess a toolbox full of lessons on how to win. As your coach, leading by example, in competion and at training, is the only way I know how and sharing this toolbox of knowledge is what you will gain under my coaching regime.

As a 4 time open state champion in my competitive career, I have gained advice and knowledge from some of the best athletes and their coaches and It has been an absolute pleasure meeting and spending time with them and I am very grateful to have this experience.

Life Member of Athletics South Australia and Enfield Harriers.

50 years competing, 30 years coaching. Qualifications in Coaching and Fitness, and all the necessary work tickets and insurances.

Nothing qualifies me more than the list of athletes I have had the pleasure of coaching through to National Medals. If you look at the National Medalists list and see there is an achievement that matches your goals, you know I have been there and supported these athletes.

I do not approach athletes, do not take from other coaches, and only work with athletes who want to be there. My best athletes are often built from focussed athletes from the age of 8, as soon as they possess the ability to behave with respect to the goals, they are ready to learn the drills to success.

Success comes with squad training and having training partners who support and compliment a mutual benefit. The belief and confidence that athletes have, when they train with their best opponent, and ask the question of each other at each training session. They also realise that missing a training session is not only disadvantageous but advantageous for their opponent. The belief that it is us against the rest also applies in local competition and the teamwork and support carries up onto the podium. They learn at training to control emotions and distractions in a group environment which sets them up for the challenges in a competition environment.

In the photo opposite 8 went to Nationals - Long Jump, High Jump, Pole Vault, Triple Jump, Short Hurdles, Long Hurdles, 100m, 200m and Multi Events. They wanted to be at training because they had more fun there than sitting at home alone, the group carries the hard work together.

The Athletics Australia Junior Athlete principal that identifies young athletes below 16 years should not specialise in one event, and should work across event groups. I like to take this further to use many events as cross training on the way to identifying the event that may be their best. This builds character and gives athletes strong resilience as they face the challenges at training and learn to take on all challenges that life throws at them.

Young athletes need to get a taste of all events, and in the Junior Development Sessions I take them through all the correct movement patterns across all field events, hurdles and sprints. I can coach middle distance and walks but the differences of endurance and explosive training is opposing in many ways. Young athletes will have favourite events, but should not be labelled and ignore other events that they have not tried, most have no idea on Pole vault, Triple Jump, Hammer Throw and Javelin.

Video analysis of movement, replay video delay app, sprint timer app, long/triple jump take off board electronic device are all used in sessions to accurately give feedback and measurements. The accurate timing of sprints with 2 ipads show that improvements are real and not tampered with by a human inacuracy, in this way athletes strive for the 100th of a second improvement. Another interesting measurement is the flying 20m, which measures the athletes top speed between 2 ipads.

An extensive list of training drills across all events that has been developed over years of consulting with coaches who have high performances and elite athletes and doing years of minor changes to the drills to get the best results. The most important qualification is in my record of success in producing Junior National Champions and Medalists across all Field Events and in the Hurdles and Sprints.

There has been well over 50 athletes at National Championships under my guidance and I have enjoyed many trips all over Australia supporting the athletes.

I travel to Nationals, and have a wealth of knowledge in managing the logistics and the total package in the locations where Nationals are held, and also where to go for fun after the competition. At the competition I warm up the athlete and mentally prepare them, and then go to the fence with recording, reviewing and giving feedback between every jump, throw and after every race.

My philosophy is if the athlete makes that team, I do all I can, to be at that National Competition to support them through to the best performance possible and finish my part of the job.

As a squad we have booked accomodation, flights, hire cars at nationals as a strong independent team. Catering to a small group, with families assisting to give the best preparation. Otherwise they end up in a group of 100 or more, food is precooked and athletes are a number on a bus and in shared rooms with strangers. The squad athletes have sleep overs in preparation, and learn to support each other and control the nervous energy with tactics that minimise negatives.

Researched and developed new technologies and new training equipment along with negotiating the developments on the oval at Enfield Harriers and occasionally doing bulk purchasing of athletic shoes.

Production of Hammer throw gloves which I have styled and made in Indonesia.

Helped to create Soft Hammer Throw and Soft Shot Puts for use in warm ups and in places where we are not allowed to damage the ground.

Helped in development of long/triple jump electronic take off device and community clock.

Built and provided many training devices and infrastructure that make a lot of difference in the training environment.

All new ideas are appreciated, and I remain open to suggestions on new equipment and new innovative ways to improve or motivate athletes.

Our daughter ( Tali Cargin-Rowe ) started training with Kym at age 9, just to improve her running style. Ten years, a LA 200m state record, and 7 national competitions later, competing in sprints, hurdles and triple jump, she still enjoys training with him.
